Three days of workshops, programs, speakers, and ad hoc parties, all celebrating the craft of writing

Every February, the Southern California Writers' Conference comes to San Diego. This year I had the privilege of teaming up with my editor, Jennifer Silva Redmond, to present a workshop on what it took to transform The Dining Car's 502-page manuscript into a novel available in hardcover, paperback, e-book, and audio book editions. It's a complicated process. One poor decision -- passing on a story edit, for example, or assuming you have the talent to design your own book cover -- can relegate your book to obscurity.
At Huckleberry House, it takes us about a year to get a manuscript across the finish line, marked by the book's official publication date. Our workshop examined the scores of steps a publisher must consider during this critical "product development" phase.
Writing fiction can be a solitary pursuit. The Southern California Writers' Conference offers a great opportunity to meet like-minded souls, share some of your work if you want to, and learn about craft, execution, and best business practices from knowledgeable writers, editors, literary agents, and publishers. If you're an aspiring writer, I hope to see you in San Diego next February. Be sure to say hello.
